known as a digital certificate.
What is a Digital Certificate?
A digital certificate is the electronic equivalent of a driver's license
or a passport. A digital certificate can be presented electronically to
prove the identity of a certificate holder, or your right to access information
or services online.
- Digital certificates bind a unique identity to a public key
- Digital certificates make it possible to verify someone's claim that
they have the right to use a given key
The most widely accepted format for digital certificates is defined by
the International Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee (CCITT)
X.509 international standard. This standard was developed so certificates
can be read or written by any application that complies with X.509.
Harold's Cross Credit Union's digital certificate will contain the following
information:
- Harold's Cross Credit Union's name and other identifying information
- Harold's Cross Credit Union's public key
